Description
The Anhinga, also known as the darter or snake bird (for its long and incredibly flexible neck), is a semi-aquatic bird that lives in tropical latitudes. Hunting and catching its prey underwater, it waits in ambush and creeps up on unsuspecting fish, frogs and other small animals. Unlike many water birds, it does not have any sort of oily coating on its feathers that would make it too buoyant for its hunting strategy to be effective. Because of this, they need to shake out their feathers and extend their wings to dry in the sunlight amid hunting trips to avoid becoming chilled and vulnerable to their own predators.
